PART FIFTEEN

The Kenilworth Line - 1740 to 2000

This is the only section of the fifteen part of the Collett family

Updated October 2009

This is the family line of Neil Collett of Kenilworth.

I first met Neil in June 1996 at the Collett Reunion at Shepton Mallet

This line has its origins in Part 1 – The Main Line starting in 1485 with Thomas Collett (Ref. 1D1) and moving forward through the years using Part 14 – The John Kyte Line to Thomas Collett (Ref. 14I5) who starts this part.

14I5

THOMAS COLLETT was born in the area of Bourton-on-the-Water in Gloucestershire.  He married Mary Tombe and the union produced four children.  Thomas died in 1739 and was buried in the Baptist Chapel at Bourton-on-the-Water.

William Collett married Elizabeth Townsend of Coventry.  While on holiday in England during the summer of 2009 Kaare Knutson from Norway (Ref. 24P35) discovered the grave of a William Collett and his wife Elizabeth at St Andrews Parish Church in Sandford-on-Thames near Oxford.

The inscription on the gravestone reads as follows:

William Collett died on 22 July 1815 age 54 and his wife Elisabeth Collett died 4 August 1815.

A search of the Collett database for a William Collett born around 1760 has revealed only one William Collett to whom this might be applicable and this is the William who married Elizabeth Townsend.

15K3

Sarah Collett married Thomas Smith of Coventry.

15K4

Hannah Collett married Joseph Pettifor of Coventry.

15K6

Thomas Collett married Ann of Coventry.

15K7

HENRY COLLETT was born in 1762 at Coventry.  He married (1) Esther Mann on 08.08.1785 at Wolston which is situated immediately north of Stretton-on-Dunsmore, herein after referred to as simply Stretton.

Esther was the daughter of William Mann and Mary Browne and was baptised at Wolston on 17.05.1762.  She died in 1788 the same year that their only child Esther Collett was born and died.  These two events are likely to be linked.

Following her death Henry married (2) Sarah Wells on 30.12.1794 at Stretton.  Sarah was fourteen years younger than Henry and was the daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth Wells.  She was born in 1776 and died in 1805.  The next five children born into the family were the result of Henry’s second marriage to Sarah.

Just over a year after the death of his second wife Henry married (3) Susannah Currell who was eighteen years younger.  This took place at St Michael’s Church in Coventry on 19.01.1807.  Susannah was born on 10.06.1780 and was the daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Currell.

Over the next sixteen years Susannah presented her husband with a further eight children, the youngest being thirteen when Henry died.  Henry Collett of Stretton was described as a cordwainer (a shoe maker) when he died in 1836.  Susannah survived him by ten years when she died in 1846.

15L1

Esther Collett was born at Stretton during the first few days of June 1788 and was baptised there on 10.06.1788.  Tragically she died only two months later on 24.08.1788 at Stretton.  Her death seems inextricably linked to that of her mother Esther who also died in 1788.

15L2

Anne Collett was born in 1795 and married Joseph Carter of Coventry in 1818.

15L3

Elizabeth Collett was born at Stretton on 04.11.1796 and was baptised there on 23.01.1797.  She was the daughter of Henry Collett and his second wife Sarah.  Elizabeth married John Forster of Stretton in 1820.  Their son Henry Forster was born in 1821

15L4

Esther Collett was born at Stretton on 15.09.1799 and it was there that she was baptised on 17.11.1799.  In 1823 she married William Hayward from the village of Ladbroke south of Southam in Warwickshire.  They had six children: Henry (1824); Sarah (1826); Hannah (1829); John (1830); William (1832); and Charles (1835).

15L5

Sarah Collett was born at Stretton on 16.12.1801 and ws baptised there on 07.03.1802.

15L6

HENRY COLLETT was born at Stretton on 13.09.1804 where he was baptised on 14.12.1804.  Sadly he was the last child of the second marriage of Henry Collett, since his mother Sarah died when he was not yet one year old.

He married Phoebe Tubbs at St Michael’s Church in Coventry in 1840.  Phoebe was born in 1803 and died in 1876.  Henry Collett was Clerk to the Parish of Stretton midway between Coventry and Rugby.  He died in 1870 and was buried at Stretton.

Mary Collett was born at Stretton on 16.04.1807.  She was baptised at Stretton on 05.07.1807 when she was confirmed as the first child of the third marriage of Henry Collett and his new wife Susannah Currell of Coventry.  Tragically, Mary died just over a year after she was born, when she passed away at Stretton on 03.05.1808.

15L8

Mary Ann Collett was born at Stretton on 02.10.1808, was baptised at Stretton on 04.12.1808, and died there on 09.02.1815.

15L9

Thomas Collett was born at Stretton on 23.02.1810 where he was also baptised on 13.05.1810.  He lived a long life and died at the age of seventy on 15.01.1881 at Bubbenhall just west of Stretton.

The death certificate issued by the Warwickshire sub-district of Kenilworth states he died from bronchitis and was a retired inn keeper.  The informant was listed as his brother William Collett (below) who was also of Bubbenhall.

15L10

William Collett was born in 1813 at Stretton and was baptised there on 07.02.1813.  He married Sarah who gave birth to his only son John.

Sarah died in 1881 in the first quarter of that year and according to the census conducted that year, her husband William Collett was listed as born at Stretton, a widower aged 66.  He was listed as head of a private house in Bubbenhall in which the only other occupant was a lodger Henry Clarke a retired ribbon manufacturer 55 years and born in Coventry.  William’s occupation at that time was given as a retired inn keeper.

The reference to inn keeper is interesting as that was the occupation of his brother Thomas Collett (above) who had died only a couple of months before the census details were recorded, and upon whose death certificate William Collett of Bubbenhall was named as the informant.

However, at the time of William’s death on 10.11.1886 his occupation was given as shoemaker.  The full death certificate issued by the Warwickshire sub-district of Rugby states that he was 70 and born at Stretton and at the time of his death he was living at the Union Workhouse in Rugby.

The cause of death was given as senile decay and the informant was Robert Billington who was Master of the Union Workhouse in Rugby.

15L11

Oliver Collett was born at Stretton in 1815 was baptised at Stretton on 16.04.1818 when his parents were confirmed as Henry and Susannah Collett.

Oliver married (1) Rachel Mann in 1838 with whom he had four children.  Rachel was born in 1813 and was very likely related to Esther Mann who was the first wife of Oliver’s father Henry Collett.  After Rachel died in 1847 Oliver married (2) Mary Hannah with whom he had a further seven children.  Oliver’s occupation was that of a butler.

15L13

Maria Collett was born at Stretton to Henry and Susannah Collett in 1819 just a few months after their daughter Charlotte (above) died.  Maria was baptised at Stretton on 07.11.1819 and was twelve years old when she died at Stretton on 01.01.1832.

15L14

John Collett was born in 1823 at Stretton where he was baptised on 16.11.1823.  John married (1) Elizabeth Ford who was born in 1818.  Their marriage produced six children for the couple before Elizabeth died in 1876.

Following the death of his wife, John married (2) Ann who was born in 1823.  According to the census of 1881, John and Ann Collett were living at 35 Parliament Street in Aston, Birmingham.  John was working as a cordwainer (a shoemaker) at 58, while Ann from Foleshill in Coventry was also 58.

The 1881 Census also revealed that two of their sons, William and Thomas, were born at Coventry, while sons Oliver and Arthur were born in the village of Marton, just two miles south of Stretton.  The baptism record for their deceased son Henry also gave Marton as his place of birth.

Emma Collett was born at Stretton in 1841 and she died in 1906 at Nuneaton.  On 01.01.1885 she married William Buckingham at St Martins Church in Birmingham.  The marriage certificate records that she was Emma Collett spinster aged 43 of Smithfield.  William Buckingham was listed as a widower and gentleman aged 60, also of Smithfield which was the wholesale market area within the city of Birmingham.

On the certificate Emma’s father was described as Henry Collett, a parish clerk and this ties in exactly with Henry Collett (Ref 15L6).  William’s father was given as Joseph Buckingham, a stocking maker, and the witnesses were Samuel Buckingham possibly William’s son or brother, and Charlotte Constable

In 1881 William Buckingham was living at 8 Bond Gate in Nuneaton aged 60 born at Plymouth and was a chimney sweep.  Living with him was his 35 years old sister Louisa Gibson a dressmaker also born at Plymouth.  So from chimney sweep in 1881 he became ‘gentleman’ by January 1885 as listed on the marriage certificate.

By the time of the Census of 1901 Emma Buckingham was listed as being aged 59 born at Stretton-on-Dunsmore, a widow living at Nuneaton with her son William Buckingham aged 16.  He was an office worker at an iron mongers and was born at Nuneaton.

There is a mystery surrounding Emma Collett in 1881 as there was no record of her any where in the UK at that time.

15M2

HENRY COLLETT was born on 04.05.1844 at Stretton.  In 1870 he married Harriet Field at Rugby Registry Office.  Harriet was born in 1850 at the village of Marton near Stretton and died in 1929.  Henry died in 1913.  The couple had fourteen children, seven of whom are listed below.

According to the 1881 Census, Henry and Harriet were living at 2 St Johns Street in Kenilworth.  With them were five of their fourteen children, all of whom were born at Kenilworth.

Henry was listed as a labourer aged 34 and born at Stretton-on-Dunsmore.  At the time of the death of their son Reginald Jack Collett at the end of 1917 Henry and Harriet Collett were living at 65 Henry Street in Kenilworth.

By April 1911 only three of the couple’s children were still living with Henry and Harriet in Kenilworth.  The census that year listed that family as Henry aged 65, His wife Harriet as 60, and sons Frank 23, Jack 17, and Ernest 16.

John Collett was born in 1845 at Ladbroke just 1 mile south of Southam.  There is no record for John in the 1881 Census and it is believed within the family that he emigrated like several of his generation did.  However, it has never been discovered as to which country it was that he emigrated.

15M11

John Oliver Collett was born at Coventry in 1851 and he married Emma who was also born in Coventry which was where their children were born.  John was a watch maker like many members of the Collett family in Coventry in 1881 while his wife Emma was listed as a silk winder.

Their address was stated as being 5 Cot (Cottage) at No. 16 Hertford Place in Hertford Close, Coventry St Michael.

William married Harriet Hands who was born at Coventry in 1839.  The couple’s three known children were also born at Coventry.  Just as three of his younger brothers were, William was a watch finisher and in 1881 he was living apart from his family at 4 Theatre Yard off Smithford Street in Coventry St Michael.

His wife and family were listed as living with Harriet’s mother 73 years old Susan Hands at 7 Charles Street in the Holy Trinity parish of Coventry.  Harriet’s status was recorded as daughter and lodger and her occupation was given as ‘weaver of silk’.  Her three children were listed as grandchildren to head of the household Susan Hands.

He married Rosanna who was born in 1841, also at Coventry where all of their five children were born.  According to the 1881 Census Thomas was a watch maker and finisher, while his wife was a silk winder.

Their address at that time was 5 Bond Street in the Holy Trinity district of Coventry.  The couple’s eldest daughter was listed as being a ‘worsted weaver’ while their eldest son was not employed.

15M18

Oliver John Collett was born in 1850 at Marton where he was baptised on 01.12.1850.  It would appear that he married Margaret sometime during the 1870s but by the time of the 1881 Census the marriage had not produced any children.

For that year the couple were listed as living at Bishopgate Green in the parish of Holy Trinity in Coventry, where Oliver John Collett aged 30 was a watch finisher and Margaret E Collett aged 33 and of Foleshill in Coventry was a silk filler.

15M19

In 1911 Harry and Annie were still living in Kenilworth where their children were born.  The census return for that year listed the family as Harry 33, Annie Elizabeth 34, and their two children at that time as Albert Harry Collett who was three, and one year old Elsie Doris Collett.  All members of the family were confirmed as having been born at Kenilworth.

By the time of the April census in 1911 Charles John Collett of Kenilworth was thirty and was living at Walsall with his wife Florence who was thirty-six, and their one year old daughter Eileen Florence.

Florence Cross was born in 1874 at Walsall and she already had a daughter when she married Charles, and this was confirmed in the census return in 1911, when Olga Alberta Hindley who was ten years old was recorded as living with the Collett family at Walsall.

The family emigrated to Canada where he died at Port Moody in 1947.  Like Charles she too died at Port Moody but ten years later in 1957.

Ada Collett was born at Kenilworth in 1884 and was recorded in the census of 1911 as being unmarried at the age of twenty-six.

Four years later Ada married Ernest Letts in 1915.  Ernest was born in 1886 and was killed on 09.10.1917 at Ypres.  He was Private 36676 with the First Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment and was buried at Poelcapelle British Cemetery in Belgium.  At the time of his death Ada was living at 35 Henry Street in Kenilworth.

Ada Letts nee Collett died at Kenilworth in 1941.

Frank Collett was born in 1887 at Kenilworth and was still living there in April 1911 with his parents when his place of birth was confirmed in the census as having been Kenilworth and his age was recorded as being 23.

Two years later he married Sarah Huff Simpson in 1913.  Sarah was born in 1889 and was tragically killed on 07.11.1940 during a German bombing raid over Kenilworth.  Sarah was 51 and was a member of the Women’s Voluntary Service and was the family home at 7 Arthur Street when the house was bombed.  She was buried at the Kenilworth Urban District Council Cemetery.

Reginald Jack Collett was born in 1892 and this is confirmed by the 1901 Census in which he is referred to as simple Jack aged eight and born at Kenilworth where he was still living with his parents at the time of the census.  Ten years later in April 1911 he was recorded as Jack Collett aged 17 while still living at Kenilworth with his parents.

However, in error it seems, his military record stated that he was born around 1886.

Reginald Collett was Private 52926 with the Eighth Battalion Royal Fusiliers and saw active service in the First World War and was killed on 24.11.1917.  Below is the record of his death.  As there is no mention of a widow, it must be assumed that he never married.

Reginald Jack Collett aged 31 died on 24th November 1917.  He was the seventh son of the late Henry and Harriet Collett of 65 Henry Street in Kenilworth.  He was killed during the early days of the Battle of Cambrai and his name appears on Panel 3/4 of the Cambrai Memorial at Louverval Nord in France.

The Cambrai Memorial is situated near the village of Louverval.  It commemorates the lives of 7,000 British and South African servicemen who died in the Battle of Cambrai from 20th November through to December 1917 under the command of Sir Douglas Haig.

Ernest was in his early thirties when he married Maggie Wilson “Daisy” Philp in 1926.  Maggie was born in 1898 and she died in 1973.  Ernest survived for a further fourteen years before he died at Kenilworth on 25.12.1987.

Another possible Kenilworth connection is the family of the widow Jemima Collett as one of her sons was a ‘watch finisher of Coventry’.  The details from the 1881 Census are as follows:

Head of the household and an annuitant, Jemima Collett was born at Kenilworth around 1816.  Living with her on the third of April in 1881 at 7 Cow Lane in Coventry St Michael were her unmarried daughters, Rebecca Collett aged 35 and dressmaker, and Ruth Collett aged 25 who was a ribbon paper box maker.

Also living with her was her unmarried son Philip Collett aged 22 who was a watch finisher.  All three children had been born at Coventry.

For other ‘watch finishers of Coventry’ see Thomas Collett (Ref. 15M16), Oliver Collett (15M18) and Arthur Collett (15M19)
