WILLIAM COLLETT was born at Turkdean on 10.09.1837.  William was a sergeant with the 66th Gloucestershire Foot Regiment and fought in the Crimea War between 1854 and 1856.

He married Susan James on 15.05.1859 in Cirencester.  At the time of their wedding William was listed as a labourer of Prices Row in Cirencester while Susan, who was born in 1830 and whose father William James was a farmer, was of Cricklade Street in Cirencester.  The couple’s first two children were probably born at Cirencester.

It was as a sergeant that he was placed in charge of a group of convicts being transported to Perth in Australia.  For the sea journey to Australia, on board the ship Clara, William was accompanied by his wife and their two children.  The Clara berthed at Freemantle in Western Australia on 12th April 1864.

Upon the ship’s arrival William and Susan must have decided to settle in Perth as all their remaining children were born there.

Following the birth of the couple’s last child the family appear to have moved to Freemantle where, from 1875 to 1881, William was Prison Warder at the Freemantle gaol.

He then joined the Pensioner Force of the police department as sergeant-in-charge of the station at Roeburne and was later the recipient of a grant of land in Newcastle Street in Perth.

A few years later and upon his retirement from the police force from 1884 to 1889, William was working in the service of Government House as a clerk and tax collector back in Perth.  Towards the end of his life he acquired further property in Perth at Palmerston Street.

William died in Perth on 29.07.1906 followed two years later by his wife Susan who died in 1908.

It seems likely that the couple lived in Perth where Francis died in 1921.  To date it has not been determined whether the marriage produced any children.
