PART THIRTY

The Third Suffolk Line – 1800 to 1990

This is the only section of the thirtieth part of the Collett family

1st February 2007

This is the family line of Rob Collett of Lincolnshire

The first family in this line has not been proved but there are indications that it could be correct.  Further research work therefore needs to be undertaken to verify the accuracy of the information.

30N1

WILLIAM COLLETT married Mary Pretty and this was possibly at Saxmundham in Suffolk where their first child was born.  It is likely that the family then moved to live at Bramfield just south of Halesworth in Suffolk where their second son was born and where their first son met and married his wife.

It may be of interest to note that an Ann Elizabeth Pretty who was born at Wortham in 1822 and who married William Collett in 1843 features in Part Twenty – The Suffolk to Australia Line (Ref. 20O1).  There is also a common connection with the town of Diss, as both William and Ann (Pretty) were living there in 1881 as were some of the children of William and Mary (Pretty).

Somewhere within all of this may be the information necessary to link the two Collett families together.

John Collett was born in 1814 at Saxmundham.  He married Harriet who was born the same year at Bramfield.  In 1881 the couple were living at Mill Lane in Saxmundham and living with them was their 40 years old nephew Robert Crisp also born at Saxmundham.

Robert Crisp’s date of birth would have been in 1840/41 indicating that he was probably the son of a sister of John Collett born around 1821.

30O2

This was a daughter of William Collett (Ref. 30N1) who was very likely born around 1815.  She married Mr Crisp around 1834 possibly in Lowestoft where their first child was born.  The family moved to live at Saxmundham sometime in the next couple of year as that was where their second son was born.

THOMAS COLLETT was born in 1824 at Bramfield.  He married Maria Chandler at Rickinghall near Diss where she was born in 1825.

In 1881 the family was living in Denmark Street, PH, Diss.  This comprised:: head of house Thomas Collett a gardener and domestic aged 57 born at Bramfield; his wife Maria Collett nee Chandler aged 56 born at Rickinghall; son Christopher Collett age 19 and a brush maker; and daughter Lansin Collett aged 16 who was a dressmaker, both children having been born in Diss.

Also living with the family at that time was Maria’s brother John Chandler, listed as ‘brother-in-law’ in relation to the head of house, aged 60 and born at Rickinghall who was blind and who had no occupation.

In addition Thomas and Maria had two nieces living with them.  These were Emma Collett aged 13 born at Luton near Gillingham in Kent and Florence Cameron aged 7 born at Cavendish Square in London.

Emma, who would have been born in 1867/68, was possibly the daughter of a younger brother of Thomas Collett while Florence, who would have been born in 1873/74, may have been the daughter of a younger married sister.

Henry B Crisp was born at Lowestoft in 1834/35.  He married Hannah H of Fressingham who was born in 1836/37.  In 1881 they were neighbours of John Collett (Ref. 30O1) living in Mill Lane at Saxmundham.  Henry was a printer and bookseller aged 46 and their two children were both born at Saxmundham.

Robert Crisp was born at Saxmundham in 1840/41.  In 1881 at 40 years of age he was unmarried and living with his uncle John Collett (Ref. 30O1) at Mill Lane in Saxmundham, the same street as his brother Henry Crisp.  Robert was listed as a labourer in the census for that year.

30P3

Walter Collett was born at Diss in 1851.  He married Harriet who was born in 1845 at Eye in Suffolk.  In 1881 they were living at the Beehive Yard in Denmark Street in Diss where Walter was a shop porter aged 30.  His wife Harriet aged 36 was a brush maker like her brother-in-law Christopher Collett.

Living with them was their son Ernest Collett aged 8 and born at Diss.  Also with the family was a young visitor by the name of Frederick Cameron aged 10 who was born in West London.

It is very likely that Frederick was the nephew of Thomas Collett (Ref. 29N3) Walter’s father, and brother of Florence Cameron the niece who was living in Denmark Street with the same Thomas Collett.

30Q3

Ernest Collett

Born in 1873

30P6

CHRISTOPHER COLLETT was born in 1863 at Diss.  In 1881 he was listed as being aged 19 and a brush maker, still living at home with his parents at Denmark Street, PH in Diss.

On 23.03.1883 he married Rachel Otley of Tostock which lies east of Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk.  It seems very likely that some, if not all, of their children were born at Diss.  Certainly the couple were living at in Diss at 36 Fair Green in 1918 as confirmed by the death record for their son Christopher William, which also states that this as his place of birth.

Christopher died in 1951.
