PART THIRTY-TWO

The Newfoundland Line

This is the first of three sections of the thirty-second part of the Collett family

Updated December 2007

This family line starts in Part Two – The Secondary Line at John Collett (Ref. 2L19) and

can be traced back through Part One – The Main Line to Thomas Collett (Ref. 1D1) in 1485.

This is the family line of Bonnie Brown (Ref. 32R5), Max Collett (Ref. 32Q91) of Placentia Bay,

and Natasha Young (see Ref. 32Q68) of Pasadena in Newfoundland and starts with the

aforementioned John Collett of Bromsgrove in Worcestershire, England

More so than any other family line that I have ever had the pleasure to construct (with information kindly supplied by Bonnie Brown and Tony Young), this particular line is full of intrigue with the interweaving of many settler families.  Whilst it is primarily a Collett family line, the other prominent families that appear many times throughout the work include: Bendle, Boutcher, Crann, Gabriel, Gilbert, Gregory, Hann, Hollett, Jarvis, Marshall, Masters, Pike, Shave, Tulk, Upshall and Wareham.

32L1

JOHN COLLETT (Ref. 2L25) was baptised at Bromsgrove in Worcestershire on 10.07.1775 where, in 1778 his father Richard Collett (Ref. 2K12) was the churchwarden at St John the Baptist Church.  It was at Bromsgrove on 17.11.1796 that he married (1) Mary Harman the daughter of James Harman and Sarah Patchett (or Pagett) who was born on 21.07.1774.

The marriage produced six children, all of whom are likely to have been born at Bromsgrove.  Tragically Mary died on 04.03.1813 and it would appear that her last born child, son James, was given his mother’s maiden name by way of a tribute.

Shortly after her death, John married (2) Mary Freer and this may have been at the time that he was a Major in the North Worcestershire Volunteers and was posted to Newfoundland where he went in 1815, accompanied by the whole family.

It was in Newfoundland that the last four children were born.

Although John died in 1818 there was believed to be a tenth child in the family who was born in 1820 but who died in 1829.

THOMAS EDWARD COLLETT was born at Bromsgrove on 07.12.1800 where he was baptised on 01.01.1802.  When only fifteen years old he moved to Newfoundland with his family.

It was at Petty Harbour that he took up the occupation of printer for a government official and met and married a local girl Anne Marshall.  She was born at Petty Harbour on 25.07.1804 and was the daughter of George Marshall and Anne Earl.

The wedding took place on 17.08.1823 at Anglican Cathedral in St John’s and they had a total of thirteen children.  After an initial period living at Petty Harbour where the first seven children were born, the family set up home at Harbour Buffett in Placentia Bay where Thomas later became a magistrate.

In between times, judging from the birth of James and the christenings of siblings Anne and Emma, the family spent a short while at Burk’s Cove and Collett’s Cove in Placentia Bay before their final move to Harbour Buffett.

It was at Harbour Buffett that Thomas died on 07.05.1884, while Anne had died there eighteen months earlier on 07.12.1882.  The Harbour Grace Standard Times newspaper reported that Anne had died leaving eight children, fifty-seven grandchildren and fifty great grandchildren.

Richard Collett was born at Bromsgrove on 08.11.1803.  He moved with his family to Newfoundland in 1815 but some years later, perhaps as a soldier like his father, he was in Africa where he died on 06.11.1824 at Loango.

32M6

James Harman Collett was born at Bromsgrove on 26.01.1808 and he moved to Newfoundland with his family in 1815.  He married Mary Chafe on 09.11.1833 at Petty Harbour.  Mary (or Maria) was born in 1810 and died in 1894.  James died earlier at Pokeham Path in St John’s on 26.06.1877.

Richard John Collett was born at Petty Harbour on 01.05.1826.  He married Sarah Upshall of Harbour Buffett who was born in 1831.  It is interesting that Richard’s younger brother George William Collett (Ref. 32N5) married Sarah’s sister Susan Upshall, while his younger sister Anne Collett (Ref. 32N6) married Sarah’s brother George Upshall.

Richard’s occupation was that of a planter at Harbour Buffett where all of his children were born and where Richard died in 1888.

There are further links between the Collett and the Upshall families based in and around Harbour Buffett, as well as other links between these two families and those of the Masters and Shave families perhaps indicating that it was a tightly knit community.

Phoebe Masters was born at Harbour Buffett in July 1861.  She married Charles Knight, the son of Stephen Knight, who was born at St John’s in November 1860.  The ceremony was conducted by the Reverend A C F Wood.  John’s occupation was that of storekeeper at the post office in St John’s where he died and was buried prior to 1928.  Phoebe died after 1935 while living at St John’s where she was also buried.

They had just two children both born at St John’s.  These were Edith Knight who was born in May 1900 and Stephen Knight born in August 1901 who went on to married Laura Churchill Upshall the daughter of Walter Henry Upshall (Ref. 32O53) and Mary Shave.

Mary Masters was born at Harbour Buffett in May 1863 where she married William A Gabriel on 14.04.1879.  He was the son of the Reverend Alfred E Gabriel and was born in Devon in England in July 1857.  Mary died on 09.04.1940 at Corner Brook and was buried at the Anglican Church Townsite Cemetery, while William was also buried there following his death on 07.01.1951.

Mary gave birth to four children and adopted a fifth.  They were: “first child” born 23.03.1880; Ada Blanche Gabriel born on 06.10.1890 at Amherst Cove and baptised at the Bonavista Anglican Church on 10.02.1891; Alfred Alexander Gabriel born at Middle Amherst Cove on 20.01.1891 and baptised at the Anglican Church on 05.11.1891; and Belle Gabriel born at Lark Harbour in August 1894.  The couple adopted Mary Shepherd who was born in May 1912 at Lark Harbour..

George Masters whose date of birth in not known is likely to have been born around 1870.  In the early 1890s he married Mary Ann Shave who was born in 1871.  However, George died very young and was buried at Harbour Buffett in 1894 around the time that his only son William Samuel Masters was born.

It seems very likely that Mary Ann Shave was the older sister of Annie Shave who married Lewis M Collett (Ref. 32O34), both girls being the daughters of Thomas Shave and Margaret Upshall (Ref. 32O41).

Sometime after the death of her husband, Mary Ann married (2) Walter Henry Upshall (Ref. 32O53) with whom she had a further two children.  Tragically Mary died in 1908 at the age of thirty-seven years.

George Collett was born in 1853 and he married (1) Mahala Crann and later (2) Mahala Senior.  His only known child was a result of his first marriage and was born at Harbour Buffett.

Born in August 1873

Emily Collett whose date of birth is not known but who was born and died at Harbour Buffett, married Albert Hollett possible in 1884.  Albert was the son of John Hollett and Elizabeth Bendle and was born in September 1862 at Harbour Buffett.  Albert was the brother to Matilda Hollett who married Thomas Edward Masters (Ref. 32O22).  It also seems very likely that Albert’s mother was in some way related to Emma Bendle who married James Masters (Ref. 32O25).

Emily and Albert are known to have had two children.  Their daughter Elizabeth Hollett was born at Harbour Buffett on 14.04.1885.  She married (1) William Gregory and later, in the early 1930s, she married (2) Malcolm Henry Peach who was born in 1874.  Both Elizabeth and Malcolm were buried at Arnold’s Cove, Malcolm having died there on 11.04.1943.

Emily and Albert’s son James Hollett was born on 29.12.1886 at Harbour Buffett and he married Ann Marie Gilbert whose parents were John Gilbert and Elizabeth Gregory, yet another connection with the Gregory family.  Elizabeth was probably the aunt to William Gregory who married James Hollett’s sister Elizabeth Hollett (Ref. 32P51).

Emily Collett was the second wife of Albert Hollett, his first wife being Janetta Guy with whom it is believed there were no offspring.  Upon the death of his second wife Emily, Albert married (3) the widow Hannah Hollett nee Hynes who had previously been married to another member of the Hollett family.  This marriage produced a further son for Albert when Frank Earl Hollett was born in 1904.  Frank Earl Hollett later went onto marry Alice Masters (Ref. 32Q57).

Albert died on 18.10.1929 and was buried at Harbour Buffett where his wife Emily was also buried.

The Collett family had later links to the Gregory family when Pearl Eleanor Collett (Ref. 32P80), the niece of Emily Collett (Ref. 32O31), married Douglas John Gregory (Ref. 32Q51).  It is therefore very likely that Douglas’s father, John Robert Gregory (Ref. 32P38) was the brother of William Gregory who married Elizabeth Hollett (Ref. 32P51) above.

Ellen Collett was born at Harbour Buffett in 1864.  She married William Tulk who was born on 16.09.1858, also at Harbourt Buffett.  Ellen died on 09.05.1931 at Harbour Buffett but her husband William died on 30.01.1958 at Coffin’s Cove just less than eight months short of his 100th birthday.

Together they had five children all born at Harbour Buffett.  These were:  Cleverly Joseph Tulk (born 1885 died 10.04.1968); Alice Tulk (born on 24.12.1889 and died in February 1989); Elsie Moore Tulk (born on 06.09.1895 and died on 15.03.1995 at Scio Twp in Washtenaw County, Michigan, USA); Ethel Tulk (dates unknown); and Ada Tulk (born on 06.08.1900 and died on 07.11.1990 at Bay Roberts).

32O33

Frederick Collett was born in 1867 and he married Isabella Burton who was born in 1874.  Their early married life was scarred by the tragic loss of three of their first five children either during the birth or within the first few months of their lives.

Frederick and Isabella both died in 1937.

Annie Shave was the sister to Mary Ann Shave who married George Masters (Ref. 32O29).

Lewis’ daughter, Augusta Blanche Collett, married her cousin Eric Hann, the son of Lewis’ sister Sarah Collett (Ref. 32O40) who married Thomas Hann.
