7N1

GEORGE EDWIN COLLETT was baptised on 20.04.1822 at Leonard Stanley.  This entry is a new addition discovered and inserted in December 2001.

George married (1) Agnes Keane in 1849 at St Giles Camberwell in London.  The two children of this marriage were both born in London at York Place, Battersea and at The Terrace in Kennington respectively.  In the spring of 1854 the family set sail for Australia aboard the ship Stebonheath and arrived at Melbourne in August that year.

Strangely the ship’s indent only lists George aged 33 and the two children George (Ref. 7O1) and Alice (Ref. 7O2).  It is therefore unclear as to whether his wife Agnes actually accompanied them to Australia, or whether she had died prior to the trip.  Either way George married for a second time during 1861 at Dunedin in Australia, his new bride being (2) Alice William–Jones.

Their only child William Henry Collett (Ref. 7O3) was born at Inglewood in Victoria.  Soon after the birth the family went to live in New Zealand where they managed a hotel at Naseby in central New Zealand.  George eventually must have returned to Australia because that is where his death was recorded in 1903 at the age of 81.

His marriage certificate of 1849 referred to him as ‘an upholder’ whereas his death certificate said he was grocer.  George referred to himself as “of Cheltenham” on the birth certificate of his youngest son William.

The original information for Ref. 7N1 above was assembled in 1995 by June Tobin with the help of Margaret Chadd.  What was always in question was that George Collett (Ref. 1N60) of Leonard Stanley near Stroud, the son of Thomas Collett and Ann Antill (Ref. 1M41) was not George Edwin Collett who stated that he was “of Cheltenham” on the birth certificate of his youngest son William Henry Collett (Ref. 7O3)

Furthermore it is more likely that the reference to Cheltenham by George Edwin Collet at that time was in regard to the district of Melbourne where he was living, rather than the town in Gloucestershire.

Information discovered in December 2001 conclusively proved that George Edwin was not George (Ref. 1N60) of Leonard Stanley.  This gentleman married Harriet Frape of Eastington near Stroud and ended up later in life at Altrincham in Cheshire, where he was a carpenter and joiner.

This then only leaves George Edwin Collett to be the one baptised at Leonard Stanley on 20.04.1822, the son of Henry and Ann Collett and as yet no connection to this family tree has been found.
